Math in the library

I have had the honor of connecting literacy and math with some of my 3rd grade library classes this year. We have had a blast in the library so far. Students have worked on math stations while in the library with one of the stations including books by Greg Tang. They had the opportunity to explore the different books and work through the riddles and problems in the books.

We then started a estimation project. The students were challenged to estimate how many books were in specific genre sections in the library. Students had to use their estimation/rounding skills as well as multiplication. They started their challenge with the following video.

Then, they started to work! They counted the books on the median shelf by 2's, rounded and then multiplied.

Students then used the pic collage app to create a poster and present their findings.

Books Can Take You Anywhere!

As an introduction to the library, we read A Mighty Fine Time Machine  and talked about how books can take you anywhere!

We even read the book in the Joy James Time Machine.

Collaboration Friday!!

This Friday was our first Collaboration Friday in the library for this school year.  We read the book Awesome Dawson, talked about what an engineer does and created our own bridges for a hot wheels car.  Our students showed great thinking and teamwork as they built their bridges.  They had to come up with a hypothesis, decide what materials to use and reflect on their process as well as think about what they would do differently next time.  Not only did they do all of that thinking, but they had a wonderful time as well.

Thanks so much to everyone who came!!
Next week for Collaboration Friday, we are going to focus on poetry.  It's going to be another great Friday in the library!

Extended hours in the library - Elephant and Piggie Party

I started this new venture this year to try to get parents and students
in the library after school on Wednesdays. I advertised all week and told the kids we would have an Elephant and Piggie party. I was cautiously optimistic as this was not the sort of thing that had worked out well in the past on my campus. I was shocked to see that I actually had people waiting to come into the library right after school. I had about 8 parents and 17 students come! We had a great time engaging in different Elephant and Piggie activities and just talking about books. I had several parents sign up for library cards and quite a few patrons check out books. Wednesday is definitely a day I will look forward to each week from now on!
